Pressure balanced shower valve vs. non pressure balanced.

By | Nov 13, 2008

What is the difference between a pressure balanced shower faucet and a non-pressure balanced valve or faucet?

Answer: A pressure balanced shower valve is designed for your protection from scalding. The valve has a mechanism that senses the difference in water pressure. If pressure from the cold side or the hot side drops, then the valve compensates and drops the whole pressure accordingly. This is so you do not get too much hot water.

With a non-pressure balanced valve, if the pressure changes in one side, then you get more water from the other side. So if someone flushes the toilet, then you get a drop in cold water pressure and then more hot water in the shower.

Remember this from older homes and cheap hotels? “Don’t flush the toilet!, I’m in the shower.” With Pressure balanced valves this is no longer an issue.
